abstract

the forming limit diagram (fld) is a useful method for characterizing the formability of sheet metals. in this paper, different numerical models were used to investigate the fld of tailor welded blank (twb). twbs were co2 laser-welded samples of interstitial-free (if) steel sheets with different thicknesses. the results of the numerical models were compared with the experimental fld as well as with the empirical model proposed by the north american deep drawing research group (naddrg). the emphasis of this investigation is to determine the performance of these different approaches in predicting the fld. these numerical models for fld are: second derivation of thinning (sdt), effective strain rate (esr), major strain rate (msr), thickness strain rate (tsr) and thickness gradient (tg). results of this research show necking will happen, when the value of msr, tsr, esr criteria is maximum, tg ≤ 0.78 and sdt criterion has the first peak in forming process time. weld line movement is one of parameters which influence formability of twbs. maximum of weld line movement of twb base on different numerical criteria was predicted and compared with experimental results. results of this research show that sdt criterion has a good accuracy for prediction of forming limit diagram and also weld line movement in the forming of twb.

Investigation on Formability of Tailor-Welded Blanks in Incremental Forming

Steel laser tailor-welded blanks (TWBs) are produced by end-to-end joining of base sheets using different welding methods. In this article, the formability of laser TWBs of St12 and St14 with thicknesses of 1 mm and 1.5 in single point incremental forming process were experimentally and numerically investigated. First, the forming limit wall angle was experimentally determined for each of the b...

Formability Study of Steel Tailor laser Welded Blanks (TWB) in Stretch Forming

The use of TWB has been developed in automotive industries because of it’s advantages such as reduction in weight, cost and fuel economy of vehicles. The main objective of the peresent work is to study the effects of weld zone, diffrence in surface coating and thickness ratio on the formability of TWB composed of AISI 304, SPCC and IF steel sheets. It was found that the narrow weld zone has lit...

A Novel Approach for Formability Prediction of Tailor Welded Blank

Formability of Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) is an important parameter which limits this kind of blanks usage. A forming criterion for tailor welded blank is presented based on the analytical model in this research. This criterion suggests Limit Strength Ratio (LSR) and Limit Thickness Ratio (LTR) for forming limit of TWB. When thickness ratio or strength ratio in tailor welded blank is greater tha...

investigation of the effects of process parameters on the welding line movement in deep drawing of tailor welded blanks

in this paper, the deep drawing process of tailor welded blanks is simulated using the finite element modelling and verified using the experimental results available in the literature. then the effect of die and material properties on the welding line movement is investigated. it is seen that the most effective material parameters on weld line movement are different between sheet metal thicknes...
